THURSDAY, DEC. 6, 2007 PUBLIC AFFAIRS SPECIALIST WWW.USDOJ.GOV/USAO/TXS (713) 567-9388 HOUSTON MAN SENTENCED FOR ROLE IN DEFRAUDING CONTINENTAL AIRLINES (HOUSTON, Texas) - Jose Alfredo Nieto, 34, of Houston, Texas, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for conspiring to commit wire fraud, U.S. Attorney Don DeGabrielle announced today. In his plea of guilty, Nieto admitted that from March 2001 through June 2001, while he was employed by Continental Airlines, he conspired with Steven Scher, of San Diego , Cailf., to defraud Continental by entering unauthorized waiver codes in Continental’s computer system, thereby allowing Continental airline tickets to be issued at unauthorized reduced fares. Nieto further admitted that he shared in monies received from issuing these illicitly discounted tickets, which caused a loss to Continental. The scheme was discovered by Continental Airlines as a result of a review of its waiver-issued tickets.
Nieto was also ordered to make restitution of $1,089,651 to Continental. Scher was convicted June 14, 2007 , after a jury trial and is to be sentenced Feb. 11, 2008 . This case was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney John Braddock. # # #
