FEDERAL INMATE GUILTY OF MURDER(Beaumont, TX) United States Attorney Matthew D. Orwig announced a 35-yearold federal prison inmate has been convicted of murdering a fellow prisoner at the federal penitentiary in Beaumont. After a week and a half of trial, ARZELL GULLEY was found guilty by a jury this morning before United States District Judge Marcia Crone. U.S. Attorney Orwig was pleased with the jury’s verdict, “Prosecutors and investigators presented a case in which the jury was able to meticulously analyze the evidence and come to their conclusion..” According to information presented in court, on December 16, 1999, Bureau of Prisons Corrections Officers reported that there was an altercation involving Gulley and co-defendant David Lee Jackson, and another inmate, Daryl Brown. Gulley and Jackson chased Brown into a cell where Brown was assaulted. Gulley and Jackson then exited the cell, running in opposite directions. Brown stumbled from the cell holding a homemade shank before collapsing. Another shank was found near where Gulley was subdued. Brown died from his injuries at a local hospital. Gulley faces up to life in prison when sentenced. A sentencing date has not been set. Jackson is scheduled to begin trial before Judge Crone on October 2, 2006. If convicted, Jackson could receive the death penalty. This case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Prisons. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joe Batte and Jim Jenkins.
